About Me
I have always had a fascination with languages which not only helped me be fluent in English & Korean 1 it also lead me to study NLP. Motivated by a desperate need to understand how languages work, how learning happens and how it can be replicated by AI. IMO love of language learning and NLP is a chicken-egg type of situation where doing NLP ♻️ learning languages. I also dabble in Japanese, Italian and most recently French.
I see 😉 myself as a very visual learner 👀 Having self-learned languages through watching TV and reading visual media such as webtoons 2, the combination of language+vision is something I think about a lot; How the multi-modalities interact (representations learning)… How the human eye + visual processing in the brain works together… Especially the concept of color (the visible light spectrum) and human perception of it in physical and lingo-psychological aspects. I mean who doesn’t like shiny 🔽 colorful things ✨
My blend of interests have paved the way to another one of my research loves: NN based colorization 🌈. It started out as a fun interest project with a chance to combine my AI research with a hobby; webtoons. Leading to a rookie 🙈 workshop paper and eventually my graduation thesis. I could go on and on about why colorization is an interesting and important CV task to work on (which I probably will in a future blog post), but in brief keywords; fun, unsupervised learning, compression, and a fresh look at CV. Colorization was also the gateway for me to get more into CV and work on generative models. I’m especially interested in applications to the fields of creativity such as art, design and fashion. For me artistic pursuits such as drawing were realistically out of my reach due to my stick-figures only level of talent, but I believe one day AI augmented tools can help bring out our mental visions into life. That’s why I’m currently working as researcher in a startup focused on these areas.
I like keeping up with the latest news in the field & trying out new libraries/tools/frameworks. So if you like some of these things as-well you might also like my blog~

This was what I always thought when I was asked the What do you to be when you grow up? question 👶 The golden standard of little young me. And oooh it keeps getting better as time goes by, with a subtle hint of something like irony, while trying to push the AI boundary everyday. I also believe in being lazy 😁 and automating/scripting what ever is repetitive (and of course in return sometimes spend more time on automation then the thing itself 🤷♀️). The untranslatable 귀찮아!
